Following the announcement last year that Prestwich had been chosen as a location for the Mayor of Greater Manchester’s Town Centre Challenge, a huge amount of work has taken place to get a scheme progressing.
As such, we are working to deliver a major redevelopment of Prestwich Village centre, in partnership with Andy Burnham and the GMCA. We envisage an exciting mixed-use development which may include new shops, restaurants, a council hub, a food hall, cinema and high quality apartments.
Other key components would be linking up with the existing health facilities in the town centre to deliver a new ‘state of the art’ health centre. Work is currently under way to ensure that the scheme is commercially viable and a funding package, potentially including significant investment from the GM Combined Authority, is being developed.
In the recent budget, Bury Labour committed an additional £250,000 for this scheme, which will allow for increased capacity to bring forward plans over the coming year.
Cllr Eamonn O’Brien, Cabinet Member for Finance and Housing and one of the Prestwich Councillors, said: “This is a truly exciting time for Prestwich. Following Bury Labour’s commitment to a multi-million pound investment, Prestwich High Street is booming and we now need our town centre to match it.”
